WELCOME BACK, CURLERS!

We hope you’ve had a terrific summer! With this incredible weather, it’s hard to believe that curling season is just around the corner.

Online registration opens this Monday, Aug. 17th, and we want to take a moment to let you know about some exciting new features the club has planned, as well as important information regarding the upcoming season.

NEW OPEN DOUBLES LEAGUE

There was incredible enthusiasm for a doubles league in the survey the board sent out earlier this year. As a result, we’re thrilled to let you know that you’ll now be able to sign up for this fun, and new-to-us format. Games will take place on Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. You can sign up with a partner, or we can match you up with someone. This league is suitable for both stick and hack deliveries. Don’t worry if you’ve never played — we’ll explain the rules and provide instruction. And, no, you won’t have to throw and then sweep your own rock!  (Please note: If you have a partner, you need to fill out the “Who I want to play with” section. If you need to be matched with someone, just leave it blank).

DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE

Based on the survey feedback, some changes have been made to the development league so that more people can participate! This non-competitive league is designed to help you develop your curling skills and understanding of the game. It will be a one-hour session on Tuesdays from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Each week will focus on a different topic, with a short instruction, followed by drills and on-ice practice. Participants will also have the opportunity to sign up for the Tuesday night league immediately following, to further practice what they have learned. During Tuesday Evening Mixed League games, players will have opportunities to receive on-ice coaching via three one-minute timeouts per team. (Please note: Players who wish to participate in a game following the skills session must also register for the Tuesday Evening Mixed League. The development league will be capped at 24 players so register early!)

BEGINNER BONSPIEL

This year, we will be launching a bonspiel for players with five years of experience or less. This beginner-friendly event will let our newer players experience the excitement of a bonspiel, but in a more relaxed environment!

TRY CURLING FOR FREE!

Do you know someone who is curious about curling? On Saturday, Sept. 26, we’ll be holding our “Try Curling for Free event”. Bring a friend, family member or neighbour to give it a try — no experience necessary! There will be two sessions: 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Register online. This event is a great way to grow our membership, so please share and encourage anyone who might be interested.

LEARN TO CURL

We will once again be running our learn-to-curl program this fall. Our coaches will teach new curlers the basics in a fun, relaxed environment. Players will learn how to throw, sweep and enjoy the game! The program starts Saturday, Oct. 7 and runs from 10 a.m. to noon. Please let your friends know!

FIND YOUR CURLING FIT

With a variety of leagues and programs available, there’s something for everyone. If you need help deciding which league is best for you, please contact Peter Osborne, the membership director (This email address is being protected from spambots. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Please mark your calendar for the Annual General Meeting, which will take place this year on Sunday, Oct. 25. This year, we will be looking for several new board members, so please give some thought to running for the board. The success of our club depends on our talented membership stepping up to fill these important roles. Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to the start of the season.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the ice soon, and don’t forget to register! Early registration helps us organize teams, build schedules and makes sure you get into the league that’s right for you.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!
